What was he doing here? Why was he in the middle of a forest with nothing but his magic to help him? Sure it was a lot of magic but with no sword or bow and arrow to help channel it, this could be difficult. Kane Marvolo Lyons bent down and picked up a pretty good piece of wood. It wasn't a really good wand but it would do for now. God he hated his father. Sure he was 21 and could do things for himself now but it was really his father that called all the shots. Kane thought it was just because he was more powerful that his father. He had definitely taken from his mom's side of the family that was for sure. His dad could barely boil water without breaking a sweat and all Kane had to do was just snap his fingers. And since his younger sister had the same problem Kane was always put with the brute of the work. Now that his mom was no longer alive to protect him from his father's wrath that is.
He did miss his mom. She had been the only one that really cared for him. She had died when he was only 10. His younger sister Winnie was only 5 and probably barely remembered her. It was a freak accident their father had told him. But Kane knew. He knew it had something to do with his mother helping out the other races. The poor lycanthropes, vampyrs, and especially the lowly humans. Kane was similar to his mother in this way. He didn't like the way the mages treated those without magic, especially the humans who had nothing special about them at all. She had tried and make their life easier and the archmages had found out. They punished her for it. Punished her by death. Of course like his father said it had been an "accident" which was code word for "made to look like an accident." Winnie and his father had bought it but Kane would have none of it.
He often wondered what the archmages would do to him if they found out that he conversed with members of the other species without permission. Sure the archmages talked with the mer or the lycans but strictly on business only. Nothing else. Kane on the other hand had several friends outside the mages. He knew many of the mer including some of the royal family like Murdoch and his younger sister Delmara. They were fun to hang around. He knew a few of the vampyrs who could party when they wanted to. He didn't know that many lycanthropes only because they were a more of a loner type of race. They had to be coaxed out if you wanted to speak to them. Kane sighed as he tromped through the forest. He was looking for mushrooms of some sort. He has zoned out when his father was talking to him but he just looked into his mind and saw the mushroom his father was talking about. Why his dad needed a mushroom he had no idea. So here he was, walking through the undergrowth with nothing but his thoughts to keep him company. He stopped suddenly. Why was he looking for this the mundane way?
Kane closed his eyes and pictured the mushroom in his mind. There! A couple of yards ahead a whole clump of them were nesting. He smiled to himself. Magic made everything so much easier. He knew his father hated him using magic but honestly he didn't really care that much. Kane was an excellent Mage. Perhaps even as good as an archmage but he wasn't born into that. He didn't have money and that's where the true power came in. He was pretty much as poor as dirt but he could provide for himself and his family. Even when he didn't really want to. They were an ungrateful little lot, never thanking him. But that's okay. Kane had never really been big on the whole thanking thing himself. He was the more... thank you in actions kind of person. He ha never been the loud, in your face kind of person. He was the more reserved, compassionate, and sympathetic type. He liked making people happy and didn't ask for much in return. He wasn't one to demand for something. He was the patient type.
But he could get a temper though. When he got riled up there was no stopping him. He remembered when the guards came by his house to tell his family that his mother was dead. He could easily tell they were lying about the cause of her death and he felt his fury grow and grow. He stepped out from behind his father, looked right at the guards and they began to scream. He was using his power to burn them on the inside. He stopped after a while but they, and him, were never the same. It was his first brush with his true power. His father had tried to stifle it for the longest time, and although the circumstances of him realizing his power was rather cruel, he felt exhilarated. He felt like himself for the first time ever in his life and he was never going back.
So he studied. And studied. He became apprenticed to one of the workers of the local archmage. He learned a great deal under his master. He learned how to control and fine-tune his power. He learned how to channel it to what exactly he wanted. He became so good that he surpassed his mentor. He began studying under the archmage, who was a rather compassionate man. He was kind to Kane and looked at him as his own son. Kane felt like the archmage was his true father, not his actual one. His real on would ignore him at home unless he wanted him to do something. It became more of a servitude rather than a family relationship. Kane bit his lip as he reached down and picked up the mushrooms. But before he did he stopped. They were poisonous. His father was trying to kill him. Kane reached back in disgust. That was it. It was time to move on. No more of his father bossing him around. No. It was time he went out into the world on his own. Kane grit his teeth and continued walking. Thank gods he remembered to put all his stuff in his pack before leaving. And thank gods for the slight premonitions he got. He was going to make his mark in the world once and for all.
