HISTORY ::
Ariadne remembers, with crystal clear precision, each and every single moment of her twenty-one years of life. Unfortunately, one of the disadvantages of having an eidetic memory is that even if she wanted to, she's unable to forget something once she's read or seen it. Born August 27, she was the youngest and only girl of the Drakos family. Bastiaan was nine, Myles was six, and Zarek was four - she was the "oops" baby, but a welcome addition regardless. Of course, her brothers didn't quite understand why their mother was so insistent about the fact that Ari couldn't play with them at first, but once they finally got used to the idea that their baby sister was "more delicate" and less interested in rough-and-tumble play than they were, all three of them turned into suffocating, overprotective shadows. Bastiaan was by far the worst; he was constantly hovering by her side, especially when she was first learning to walk, and she often made it abundantly clear that she was not alright with her eldest brother's excessive attention through haphazardly waved fists and loud screeches of indignance and annoyance. Ariadne's first word was "no" - her first full sentence was "Ba'teean, leave me 'lone.". Her vocabulary expanded rapidly from there, and soon, everyone else had a hard time getting a word in edgewise when she decided it was her turn to talk. However, if her audience consisted of anyone other than her family, she wouldn't say a peep.
Ari was seven when she first discovered the benefit of having three older brothers who insisted that they follow her everywhere she went - she could boss them around without much effort. In fact, she had already figured out that with naught but a widening of her eyes and a tremble of her lower lip, she could convince Bastiaan, Myles, and Zarek to do just about anything ( which wasn't a whole lot, really, since she was only seven ). Once she had her brothers sufficiently trained, she figured that it might be fun to try her new skill out on other boys. That was where Ariadne hit a snag. For starters, she had to be willing to talk to other people in order to boss them around. Also, the boys in their "neighborhood" weren't her brothers - they didn't think she was the cutest thing alive, so they were less inclined to trust her. She was a girl, after all, and the boys who had older sisters were already well aware of how ruthless and manipulative females could be. Evan Mitro - a boy her age who lived a couple houses down - was the only exception. One day, while the other children were busy ignoring her, Evan marched over and thrust out a chubby hand, introducing himself to Ari right before loudly declaring that Ree was his new best friend. From that moment on, the two were inseparable - she was nine by then, and quite happy that she finally had her first friend. Her brother's weren't so sure about the boy, but their sister was happy, so they were happy.
Four years passed before she had her first negative experience with the water. One morning, as dawn was just beginning to stretch its fingers across the sky, Evan and her three brothers decided that it would be fun to pluck her out of her warm bed while she was still asleep. Ariadne awoke to find Evan wrapping her in an old blanket, which was nothing new, as he had picked up the habit of coddling her, so it wasn't until Bastiaan picked her up and the foursome began the trek to Glacier Pool that she started to wonder what was going on. The four had a habit of presenting her with surprises at random, however, so she thought nothing of it. But when they arrived at Glacier Pool, there was nothing waiting for them. Instead, she found herself being unceremoniously dumped into the water. Having never been a morning person, Ari didn't fully wake up and realize what was happening until the water closed over her head. Her first thought was "I hate them". Her second, more urgent thought was "Oh gods, I can't breathe!". The blanket was caught on something, and she was tangled up in it, and since Evan had wrapped her up much like you would wrap up a baby, the material was restricting her gills ability to take in water. Thankfully, Evan and her brothers realized something was wrong and saved her before she suffocated, but ever since that morning, Ariadne has a mini panic attack every time she fully submerges herself in the water.
She was fifteen when the gods finally called an end to the war and established an annual tournament in its stead. Her father had been a warrior all her life ( which meant she got to see him for a couple of days right around her birthday, if she was lucky ), and each of her brothers had joined the military upon turning seventeen, so she was ecstatic about the gods' decision. Yes, her brothers had a habit of exasperating her with their protectiveness, but they also spoiled her rotten, and Ari preferred that to nightmares and the constant worry she saw etched across her mother's face. The worry was still there even with the Drakos men home for good, but it changed from an "I hope no one shows up at my door with news that my husband or one of my sons is dead" worry to an "Oh gods, what are my sons teaching their sister now?" worry. Her mother's fears were not unfounded - her brothers were teaching her how to hunt and fight. With the war over, the reality of the conditions they were struggling to live in came to light, and Ariadne's brothers took it upon themselves to ensure that their baby sister would have the skills necessary to live on her own and protect herself if worst came to worst. Bastiaan taught her how to handle a bow and arrow; Myles, a trident; Zarek, throwing knives. The three also took turns teaching her how to handle herself in close quarter combat, and before long, she was nearly as good ( if not better ) than her three siblings.
It was around that same time that boys started to pay attention to her. But that was also when the "ginger" jokes started. As her confidence in her fighting and hunting skills grew, Ari finally began to come out of her shell. She was invited along on hunting expeditions when only her brothers had been invited in the past, and though it took weeks, she eventually got to the point where she was comfortable talking to the guys in their group. One of them made the mistake of mentioning that they all thought she was a damn good hunter. Almost instantly, she was the chatterbox her brothers knew and loved - the compliment had been all the incentive she needed to fully open up. When she was with her brothers and the group they hunted with, Ariadne was a friendly, captivating young woman. When she was wandering the capital city on her own, however, she often retreated back into her shy persona. Her red hair made her the brunt of many a cruel joke, and she became a snippy smart-aleck in an effort to cover up the fact that her feelings were hurt. Sometimes her impudence made things worse, but more often than not, her bared teeth and a flash of her throwing knives was all she needed to stave off even the most ruthless of teasers. It's been six years, but things haven't changed much for Ari. Fewer people are still willing to tease her, but those that do are ruthless in their cruelty, which leaves her wondering if life will be this way forever.
ROLE PLAY SAMPLE ::
Ariadne did not like being startled awake, especially not when the disappearance of her nice, warm, fur blanket ( made from the hide of the first bear she'd ever killed ) was involved. Rolling in the direction she thought her blanket had gone, she waved an arm through the air. She was rewarded with a muffled snort of laughter. Evan, then. Cracking open one eye, she attempted her best "I'm still sleepy and I want to make sure you know I hate you" glare. "Give me back my blanket, Ev." She growled. Her best friend simply grinned, completely unfazed by her usual morning grumpiness. Rising up on her elbow, the redhead gathered her feet under her and pounced before Evan could even blink, and the two tumbled to the floor with a thump. Ari poked her friend in the side, where she knew he was ticklish. "Give. Me. Back. My. Blanket." She said, punctuating each word with a poke at Evan's side. He relented after the final poke, and with a glad cry, she wrenched the blanket from his grasp and hastily wrapped herself up in it. Giggling, she threw herself back on her bed and curled up. She shrieked when Evan sprang up from the floor and flopped down on top of her. "Evan, I can't breathe!" She whined plaintively.
"Get up then." He offered, his deep voice a rumble in her ear. Growling softly - the sound a perfect mimicry of a cat's growl - Ariadne turned her head...and licked Evan's nose. He made a sound of disgust and jerked his head back, coming to rest on his haunches. Grinning triumphantly, the redhead hopped up and sauntered over to her closet. "That's what you get for pinning me." She sang. Glancing over her shoulder, she flashed her best friend an impish grin. Her hands went to the hem of her oversized sleep shirt, and in an instant, Evan was off her bed and out the door. "Bastiaan said you better hurry and get dressed or we're leaving without you." He called over his shoulder. Squealing in delight, she hastily dressed in her favorite pair of jeans and a random shirt. Yanking on first one boot, then the other, Ari snatched up her jacket from its place at the foot of her bed and raced out of her room. Evan and her three brothers were sitting around the kitchen table finishing up breakfast, and all four burst into laughs when she skidded across the floor and dropped herself onto Myles' lap. "I wasn't done eating yet!" Ignoring her brother's protests, she stole a bite of his fish, then quickly got up and circled around to Zarek.
"So, where are we going today?" She chirped, bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet. "It's a secret." All three of her brothers said at once. Pouting, she turned her gaze to Evan, but he just shrugged his shoulders and continued eating. Her mother handed her a plate of fish and wild carrots, and Ariadne dug in. Her brothers had neglected to tell Evan where they were going because they knew she would eventually get it out of him and ruin the surprise. That meant they had something awesome up their sleeves. Finishing her breakfast in record time, she deposited her plate in the bucket that held the other dirty dishes, then proceeded to dance around the table, quietly singing in an effort to get her brothers and her best friend to hurry up and finish eating. They ate slower because they knew it would annoy her, and only a knock at the front door saved them from her impatience. "I'll get it!" Ari cried, eager to see who was knocking on their door this early in the morning, and completely missing the grins her four boys shot at each other. The moment she opened the door, all the color rushed from her face. "T-- Tristan, hi." She said quietly, staring wide-eyed at the young man standing in front of her clutching flowers.
"These are for you, Ree." Tristan said in a rush, thrusting the flowers towards her. Not wanting to seem rude, she took the flowers, automatically bringing them to her nose. Almost instantly, she wanted to cry. She drew a shaky breath and stepped back. "Uhm... Would you l-like to come in?" She offered, mentally breathing a sigh of relief when Tristan shook his head. "No, that's alright." He said softly, and Ariadne had to swallow around the lump in her throat. "I've caused you enough pain already. I just wanted to make sure you knew how truly sorry I am." She nodded, not trusting herself to speak, and Tristan smiled sadly. "Bye Ree." He whispered, kissing her on the cheek. The redhead stood in the doorway and watched him walk out of her life. She knew she was doing the right thing. Tristan had cheated with her on another girl - he was lucky her brothers hadn't found out about it, otherwise he probably would have been chopped up and fed to the shrakes. Brushing away an errant tear that managed to slither down her cheek, Ari shut the door and returned to the kitchen, her bright bubbly mood back in place once she reached her brothers. "Somebody just left these on the doorstep." She explained with a shrug.
