Bastiaan had a life before little Ari. He was a crazy little ball of energy, always running around and jumping and playing like the spastic little tyke he was. His tuft of dark hair was always filled with dirt and matted with a hint of mud, which made his momma tell him to clean up or be forced to sleep outside. Of all the Drakos boys, Bastiaan was the most rambunctious and curious. He climbed trees as high as he could and would sometimes spend all day running in the forest, finding new paths to take. He also found himself in less-than-desireable situations quite often. In fact, he was once cornered by an overly large moose that chased his little butt all the way into the village. Because of that little incident Bastiaan began to beg his dad to teach him a few self defense techniques. He was pretty good at the wooden sword his dad made him, but he was best at the bow and arrow. Once he started to get the hang of it little Bastiaan would take his bow everywhere, and could be seen on many cool nights and breezy afternoons whittling away to make his own arrows.
But that was before Ariadne. She was born when he was nine, and her birth changed everything. Sure, when she was still too small to do much but sleep Bastiaan was all over the place, shooting little targets and climbing and even doing some fun swimming(when his dad would take him to the glacier pool). However, he began to come home earlier to check on his new baby sister, who, mom explained, was very delicate and could not play any rough boy games. This confused and worried little Bastiaan. Too little to play fun games? This was the first symptom of the overbearing brother syndrome. When she started to crawl Bastiaan spent more time following the tiny little Ari around the house, making sure she wasn't going to hurt herself in any way, shape, or form. Even from the start she would push him away and try to crawl somewhere interesting(and usually dangerous in Batty Bastiaan's eyes). When she started walking all Hell broke loose. Bastiaan was constantly paranoid she'd get hurt, yet her first words were to tell him to back off. Apparently he wasn't the best listener.
As he grew into his preteens and even his teen years his attitude toward Ariadne did not change. He was always there, protecting and taking care of her. He also scared away the nasty children that made fun of her, often sending them away with bloodied noses or other such injuries. When Ari started growing into her bossy pants Bastiaan began to dote on her. He would do whatever she asked, and whenever she made her little sad face his heart broke and he'd pick her up and hug her and tell her that he'd even pick her pretty flowers from the neighboring territories if it would make her smile. Sadly, his protective attitudes didn't always protect her. The Drakos brothers once thought it would be fun to wake Ari up in an ice cold pool, but it went horribly awry. This destroyed all of the space he'd started to allow Ariadne. He was even more protective, and even though lots of girls were starting to notice him he was with Ari instead. Well, that didn't last.
At 17 and as the eldest brother of the Drakos family Bastiaan was drafted into the war. He hated leaving Ari with no one to take care of her but Evan(who just was not as brave as Basti wanted him to be) but he had no choice. He followed his father to the war and the innocent world in which he'd been living quickly evaporated. Death occurred at every turn. He'd been training at a young age to be the best little warrior he could and it payed off, much to Bastiaan's dismay. He murdered many people. He was stationed in the Lycanthrope territory. Wolves howled at night, picking off his friends right and left. The night his brother Zarek had almost been eaten was the night he discovered his greatest talent. Everyone knows that the Mer folk's voices would render anyone captive, but that didn't work as well when the Lycans continued to stuff their ears with wax pulled from beehives. Bastiaan's voice was not what his greatest gift was. His volume was. The day his brother was attacked Bastiaan had almost lost his life as well. He'd been tackled to the ground by a wolf and was watching helplessly when one cornered Zarek when his mouth opened and a song flew out. It was his last hope, even though he knew the creatures were well protected.
Surprisingly, both Lycans stopped and began to sway their heads. Still singing, Bastiaan threw off the wolf and ran to Zarek, who was holding his ears tightly, dropped to the ground. Mer folk weren't affected like other races were, but he was still protecting himself. This confused Bastiaan but his first and foremost thought was to shoot down both weres and cut off their heads, which was a violent but very satisfying process. When he was certain they were dead he stopped singing and Zarek rushed over to him, shouting about being deaf in the ears, Basti was so damn loud. Apparently climbing up the top of the trees and screaming as loud as he could so he could listen to the echoes was a serious vocal training boost. From that moment on he was always at the head of the fight, singing loudly and never off key.
On the opposite side of awesome day stood his most horrific experience in the war. There was a night when he was kept on watch and in the midst of his patrols he was thrown to the ground and right into two huge boulders towering above him. His right arm with its shield strapped down was lodged between the two boulders, and he couldn't get himself free. He couldn't use his bow and arrow, and his sword wasn't effective when the wolf danced away every time he got close. He struggled for minutes to pull his arm away and keep the wolf at its distance. His arm was bloodied and torn when he finally freed it, and when he returned to camp(lycan cut to pieces) he had to get sown up, which left a large scar on his right arm from the base of his elbow almost to the wrist. There were two horizontal slashes parallel to that line on each end, making a hideous H – though the two shorter scars were maybe an inch and a half long, though they were deeply dug in – that he usually covered with long sleeves(good thing he lived in Ni'ith). Oh, and if you were wondering yes he is left handed.
However, the day came when the war ended. He was sent home to – finally – be reunited with his dear, sweet sister Ariadne. Fearing the whole time when he was gone that little Ari was harmed, he and his two brothers decided to train her in whatever fighting skills they had developed(excluding his voice) and she was quite adept. This made Bastiaan proud and slightly more comfortable leaving her for a short time, but it didn't stop him from following her around and keeping her as safe as possible.
flashbacks or...) The one thing he was proud of after the war was the beautifully crafted sword he stole from a fallen Lycan; it had dragons cut into the blade and a delicate yet strong hilt that swirled upwards toward the wrist, acting as a hand guard as well as a sword. It was the length of an arm and a half, almost reaching the floor when he strapped it to his side – even though he stood a full 6'3” high. It was his most treasured possession.
One thing he continued after the war was his singing, though he kept it to himself by going off into a secluded part of the forest to do so. Singing comforted him greatly, and he often sang Ariadne to sleep as she grew up. Nowadays he's a 30 year old man, in a little hut no more than twenty yards from his sister's home. If one listens closely they can hear him singing as he cooks, billowing gray smoke curling out of his chimney and darkening the otherwise bright sky.
